1950s US Television..!
One of the most currently-disliked shows of the 1950s, mainly due to the sponsor.
Few kinescope recordings survive (few 1950s newscasts were preserved), though amazingly, there is a surviving episode from May 06, 1949 in one of the television archives.
I live in Australia, so I can't comment on how this compares with the "Big Network" American newscasts of today, though compared to Australia's news-reporting......nevermind, being impaled inside of a large puppet by a man wearing purple make-up would be more pleasant than watching todays Australian newscasts. I can only hope the American newscasts of today aren't as f***ing awful as the aussie ones.
On an unrelated note, this series also went by the title "Plymouth News Caravan".
During the the 1952-1953 season, several shows filled in the other 15 minutes:
On monday & wednesday & friday, the other 15 minutes was filled with "Those Two", a delightful musical-sitcom series with few surviving episodes (I know of only one episode to survive, though there are probably others).
On tuesday & thursday, the other 15-minutes was filled with the wonderful series "The Dinah Shore Show", a charming music series. At least 15 episodes survive of the 15-minute version of the series (possibly 18 episodes or more, actually), including the episode that aired 18 September 1952 (the day before this newscast aired)
Other 15-minute shows used to fill in the 30-minute time slot of either the Camel or Plymouth series included "Mohawk Showroom", "The Little Show", "The Arthur Murray Party", "Coke Time with Eddie Fisher", and "The Tony Martin Show".
During the 1956-1957 season, it was replaced with the fondly-remembered "Huntley-Brinkley Report". I don't know how much survives of THAT series.
